You've already pictured it. Top down on the MacArthur, the skyline going pink off your left shoulder, that first warm gust that tells you the trip has actually started.
Then you hit the fine print and the picture goes gray. An age surcharge nobody mentioned. A deposit hold listed as “up to.” A mileage cap buried three clicks deep. Insurance you're not sure you already have.
So here it is — every convertible rental requirement in Miami Beach we hold you to, published before you spend a dollar. Not because we love paperwork. Because you should be able to read the whole deal in one sitting and then go book something fun.

Every deposit above is a refundable hold, not a charge. Every one of those cars is the car you get — not a stand-in from the same “class.” More on that in a minute.
Minimum age, and why it changes car to car
Twenty-one gets you the Mustang Convertible or the Jeep Wrangler, doors on or doors off. Twenty-three opens the Sahara. Twenty-five opens the Mustang GT and the Porsche Boxster. Twenty-eight is the gate on the Corvette C8.
That last one surprises people, so let's be direct: the C8 is a 495-horsepower mid-engine sports car, and its age minimum is higher than almost anything else on a Miami rental lot. If the Corvette was the plan, better to know now than at the curb with your bags.
The minimum age isn't a surcharge tier you can buy past. It's a gate — and we'd rather you find it here than at the curb.
There's no version of this where you pay a fee and the number goes away. If you're 24 and you want a Mustang, the answer is the Mustang Convertible: same open sky, four seats, unlimited miles, and honestly the better car for a week of Miami driving anyway.
The security deposit — what it is and what it isn't
The deposit is a hold on a credit card in the driver's name. It's not a charge, it doesn't leave your balance the way a purchase does, and it's released after the car comes back in the shape it left in.
It scales with the car, which is the only honest way to do it: $300 on a Mustang Convertible or Wrangler, $500 on a Sahara or Boxster, $1,000 on a GT, $1,500 on a C8. That number is published before you book and doesn't move between the booking screen and pickup.
One practical note that saves a lot of grief: the card must be a credit card in the name of the person driving. A friend's card, a spouse's card or a debit card is where a lot of otherwise perfect vacation mornings fall apart — everywhere, not just here.
Mileage: unlimited versus 150 miles a day
This is the most misunderstood line on any Miami rental agreement, and it matters more here, because the best drives in South Florida are long ones.
Unlimited miles: Mustang Convertible, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Doorless, Jeep Sahara. One hundred fifty miles a day: Mustang GT, Corvette C8, Porsche Boxster.
Here's what a real Miami day costs you in miles, round trip from South Beach:
· Ocean Drive, the causeways and a lap of Key Biscayne — roughly 35–45 miles. Comfortable in anything.
· Shark Valley in the Everglades and back — roughly 90 miles. Still fine on a 150-mile day.
· Islamorada in the Upper Keys and back — roughly 170–180 miles. That's over the cap on a GT, a C8 or a Boxster.
· Key West and back in one day — roughly 330 miles. Only sensible in an unlimited-mileage car.
So if the Keys are on your list, book unlimited miles and stop thinking about it. Staying in town? 150 miles a day is more road than most guests use.
There's also a lower-priced Mustang cruise rate with 100 miles a day included, built for guests staying on the island who'd rather put the difference toward dinner. Ask for it by name.
A requirement you find out about at pickup isn't a requirement. It's an ambush.
What you actually need to bring
Short list. It hasn't changed in years.
· A valid driver's license in the name of the person driving.
· A credit card in that same name for the deposit hold.
· Proof of your own full-coverage auto insurance, if you're a US or Canadian driver planning to use it.
· Florida drivers must provide their own full-coverage auto insurance.
· Your passport, if you're visiting from outside the US.
If you're visiting from outside the US
Your home license works in Florida if it's in English. If it isn't, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it — the IDP is a translation, not a license, so it only works paired with the original. Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles publishes the current rules for visiting drivers.
The bigger difference is insurance. A policy written in Madrid or São Paulo almost never follows you into a Florida rental, so international guests add our coverage. Insurance, the honest version
If you're a US or Canadian driver with a full-coverage personal auto policy, that coverage usually extends to a rental car — usually, not always, and the exceptions tend to involve exactly the kind of car you came here to drive. Some policies exclude high-value or performance vehicles. Some credit cards offer rental coverage, but often as secondary coverage that only kicks in after your own policy pays.
We won't guess at your policy and we won't scare you into buying something you already have. Call your insurer and ask two questions — does it extend to a rental convertible in Florida, and is there a vehicle-value exclusion. Four minutes and you'll know. Taxes, fees and the things that show up on the invoice

· Florida sales tax at the Miami-Dade rate of 7%, applied to the vehicle rental after any discount, plus prepaid fuel and additional-driver charges.
· The Florida rental car surcharge — a flat $2.00 per rental day, set by the state, not by us.
· $10/day to add a second driver, who needs to meet the same age minimum and bring the same license.
· Collision damage waiver, if you take it, and prepaid tolls, if you want them — neither of which is taxed.
On tolls: Miami is effectively cashless. The causeways, the expressways and Card Sound Road into the Keys all read a transponder or photograph your plate. Prepaying is the simplest path — you drive, and there's no surprise three weeks later.

Can international visitors rent a convertible in Miami Beach?
