Mustang vs Mustang GT Convertible: Which One Should You Rent in Miami?
Picture it. The top folds back with one touch. The Miami sun lands on your shoulders. You pull out onto Collins Avenue and the palms start sliding past. Now the only question left is what you want to hear when you press the gas: a confident, easygoing pull, or a full V8 rumble that turns heads from the sidewalk cafes.
That's really the difference between the Mustang Convertible and the Mustang GT Convertible. Same legendary shape. Same top-down freedom. Two very different personalities. As the team behind the largest Mustang convertible fleet in Florida, we get asked which one to pick every day, so here's our honest answer.

The Mustang Convertible: the easy, everyday dream
If you've pictured yourself cruising Ocean Drive at golden hour, this is probably the car in the picture. The Mustang Convertible is relaxed, smooth and easy to love from the first mile. The turbocharged EcoBoost engine has plenty of punch for merging onto I-95 or climbing the causeways, and it's comfortable in Miami traffic, which, let's be honest, is where you'll spend a bit of your trip.
Who it's perfect for
First-time Miami visitors who want the full convertible experience without overthinking it.
Road-trippers. The standard rate includes unlimited miles, so the Keys, Naples or a long loop up A1A are all fair game.
Drivers aged 21 to 24. The Mustang Convertible is open to renters from 21.
Couples and small families. Four seats, top down, everyone in the photo.
Unlimited miles, or the 100-mile rate
The standard Mustang Convertible rate includes unlimited miles, which is why it's the car we hand to most road-trippers heading for the Seven Mile Bridge. In select seasons, especially the low season, we also offer a limited-mileage Mustang rate for guests who simply want to enjoy Miami in style: lunch in Coconut Grove, dinner in South Beach, sunset on the causeway. Drive up to 100 miles per day and enjoy the savings. If you go over, by 1 mile or 100, we simply charge the difference between the limited-mileage rate and the unlimited-mileage rate. That rate is for the Mustang Convertible only.
The Mustang Convertible is the car in the picture you've been imagining. The GT is the soundtrack.
The Mustang GT Convertible: the V8 soundtrack
Now let's talk about the other one.
The Mustang GT Convertible carries a 5.0-liter V8, and with the top down there's nothing between you and that sound. Pull away from a light on Brickell Avenue and you'll feel it in your chest. Take it across the Rickenbacker Causeway toward Key Biscayne and the water, the skyline and the engine note all arrive at once. It's the car people rent when the drive itself is the point.
Guests feel it too. One of them, Gabriele, wrote in his Google Review: "Rented a Mustang GT for my vacation. Top service, wonderful new car."
Who it's perfect for
Celebrations. Anniversaries, milestone birthdays and honeymoons deserve a little drama.
Car lovers who want to feel a V8 in a city built for top-down driving.
Content creators who want the look and the sound on camera.
Drivers aged 25 and up. The GT requires renters to be at least 25.
How the 150-mile allowance works
The Mustang GT includes 150 miles per day, calculated across the whole rental. A 7-day rental includes 1,050 miles in total, to use however you like. For most Miami itineraries, that's more than enough: Miami Beach, Wynwood, Coconut Grove, Key Biscayne and Brickell all sit within a short drive of each other.
If you go past your total allowance, extra miles cost $1 to $4 per mile depending on the length of the rental: $4 per additional mile on a 1-day rental, even if it's only 1 mile over, and $1 per mile on a 7-day rental. For rentals of 2 to 6 days, ask us for the exact rate when you book.
Pull away from a light on Brickell Avenue and you'll feel the GT in your chest.
The practical differences that actually matter
Beyond the engine, three things usually decide it.
Age
The Mustang Convertible is open to drivers 21 and over. The Mustang GT requires drivers to be 25 or older. If anyone under 25 will be driving, the choice is made for you.
Miles
If your trip includes Key West, Orlando or a big Gulf Coast loop, unlimited miles on the Mustang Convertible take all the math out of it. The Overseas Highway alone is 113 miles of bridges and ocean before you reach Key West, so a Miami-to-Key West round trip runs well past 300 miles. On a GT, a longer rental gives you a bigger mileage bank to absorb a drive like that.
Deposit
The security deposit is $300 on the Mustang Convertible and $1,000 on the Mustang GT. Either way, it's released the same day you return the car.

One perfect Miami day in each
Sometimes the easiest way to choose is to picture the day.
A day in the Mustang Convertible
Pick up the car in Miami Beach after breakfast and drop the top before you leave the garage. Cruise Collins Avenue north with the ocean flashing between the buildings, then swing back south for a late lunch in South Beach. In the afternoon, take the MacArthur Causeway over Biscayne Bay, wander Wynwood's murals, and finish with dinner in Coconut Grove under the banyan trees. It's an easy, happy, all-day kind of car, and with unlimited miles on the standard rate you never glance at the odometer.
A day in the Mustang GT Convertible
Start in Brickell with a coffee and the towers glowing in the morning sun. Take the Rickenbacker Causeway to Key Biscayne while the road is quiet and let the V8 do the talking on the way over the bridge. Spend the afternoon at the beach, then head back for golden hour along the bay and a long dinner somewhere you dressed up for. When you pull up to the valet, you'll notice people noticing the car. That's the GT.
With the GT, you'll notice people noticing the car.
Both days stay comfortably inside the GT's 150-mile daily allowance, and both are exactly what the Mustang vs Mustang GT Convertible question is really about: how you want the day to feel.
So which one should you rent?

Our honest take, from people who drive both every week:
Choose the Mustang Convertible if you're under 25, planning long drives, want unlimited miles, or just want the classic top-down Miami experience with nothing to think about.
Choose the Mustang GT Convertible if you're 25 or older, mostly staying around Miami, and want the V8 sound to be part of the memory.
Can't decide? Book the Mustang Convertible for the road trip days and treat yourself to a GT day for the big night out. Plenty of our guests do exactly that.
