Rent a Car in Miami With a European License: Convertibles, Deposits, Debit Cards and What to Bring

You've watched the road-trip movies your whole life. The open-top Mustang. The palm trees sliding past. The bridge over impossibly blue water. Back home, a car like that is rare, heavily taxed and usually parked in someone else's garage. In Miami, it can be yours by lunchtime.

The only thing standing between you and the MacArthur Causeway with the top down is a little paperwork, and the good news is that there isn't much of it. The same handful of questions comes up every time, so here's the friend-in-Miami version: everything you need to rent a car in Miami with a European license, what to pack, what it costs beyond the rate, and the few road rules that catch first-time visitors out.

What You Need to Rent a Car in Miami With a European License

Miami car rental foreign license, debit card car rental Miami, convertible rental deposit Miami, international driving permit Florida

Start with the reassuring part. Florida law lets visitors drive on the license they already have. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles puts it plainly: visitors who want to drive here need "a valid driver license issued in his or her name from their country of residence" in their immediate possession. That's it. No international driver's permit, No Florida license, no local test.

When you pick up a convertible from us, bring three things:

  • Your original, valid driver's license from your home country, in your name. Photos and photocopies don't count.

  • Your original passport. We check it alongside your license at pickup.

  • Your payment card, in the driver's name. More on debit vs credit in a moment.

If you're using a credit card's collision damage waiver instead of buying coverage, bring proof of that coverage too. We accept credit card CDW with proof, and having the letter or policy page on your phone saves everyone time.

That's the whole list. We complete the paperwork before you arrive, so pickup takes minutes, not an afternoon. We sent an email requesting you to upload these documents through a secure link, so everything is done and verified in advanced. On the day of pick up we just verify its you.

Do you need an International Driving Permit?

This is the question we get most, and the honest answer has two parts. Official Florida guidance asks for a valid license from your country of residence and does not list an International Driving Permit as a requirement. Florida's licensing statute exempts nonresidents who carry a valid license from their home country.

We still recommend packing one, especially if your license isn't printed in English or uses a non-Latin alphabet. An IDP is simply a translation of your license in several languages. It helps anyone reading your license, from our team to a police officer at a traffic stop, understand your details quickly. Two rules to remember: it works alongside your original license, never instead of it, and you have to get it in your home country before you travel. You can't pick one up once you've landed in Miami.

Your home license gets you the keys. An International Driving Permit just makes sure everyone can read it.

Debit or Credit? How Payment Works for European Guests

Here's where European drivers often get a pleasant surprise. At most US rental companies, a debit card is a dealbreaker. With us, most European guests can pay with a debit card. Renters from the US and Canada need a major credit card, but if you're visiting from Europe, your everyday bank card will usually do the job.

Rules can vary by country and card type, so the simplest move is to mention your card when you book and we'll confirm it before you fly. No surprises at pickup, which is the whole point of how we work.

One thing to plan for: on a debit card, the security deposit comes out of your available balance rather than sitting as a hold on a credit line. Budget for it so it doesn't eat into your first dinner on Ocean Drive.

Security Deposits by Model

Every rental carries a refundable security deposit, and the amount depends on which car you choose. Here's exactly what to expect:

  • Mustang Convertible: $300

  • Jeep Wrangler: $300

  • Jeep Sahara: $500

  • Porsche Boxster: $500

  • Mustang GT Convertible: $1,000

  • Corvette C8 Convertible: $1,500

We release your deposit the same day you return the car. After that, your bank controls how fast the pending hold disappears for your account.

Which Convertible Fits Your Trip (and Your Age)

Minimum ages vary by model, and they're firm, so check this before you fall in love with a specific car:

  • Mustang Convertible: 21+, seats 4, unlimited miles (or a seasonal 100-mile-a-day rate), one-touch power soft top

  • Jeep Wrangler (including Doorless): 21+, seats 5, unlimited miles, manual soft top

  • Jeep Sahara: 23+, seats 5, unlimited miles, one-touch power top, leather seats and integrated GPS

  • Mustang GT Convertible: 25+, seats 4, 150 miles per day, one-touch power soft top

  • Porsche Boxster: 25+, seats 2, 150 miles per day, one-touch power top

  • Corvette C8 Convertible: 28+, seats 2, 150 miles per day, one-touch power hardtop

On the GT, Boxster and Corvette, extra miles cost $1 to $4 each depending on rental length: $4 a mile on a 1-day rental, even for one mile over, and $1 a mile on a 7-day rental past the 1,050-mile total.

For most European dream-drivers, the Mustang Convertible is the answer. It's the car from the films, it seats four, and unlimited miles means a run down the Overseas Highway to Key West doesn't come with a mileage bill. We run the largest Mustang convertible fleet in Florida, so the car is waiting.

And because this is the part that matters most to people who've flown nine hours for it: when you book a Mustang, you get a Mustang. We guarantee the model you reserve. Colors depend on what's available on the day, so we can't promise red over white, but we will never hand you a sedan and a shrug.

One seasonal note for Jeep fans: the Doorless Jeep isn't offered during the rainy season. Once the dry months arrive, it's one of the best ways to feel the Keys.

Book a Mustang, get a Mustang. We guarantee the model you reserve, never a "comparable" sedan at the counter.

Tolls and SunPass: No Booths, No Sign-Ups

Miami's causeways and expressways are full of cashless tolls. Every car in our fleet comes with SunPass built in, so you drive straight through without stopping or registering anything.

Here's how it's billed: you pay the actual tolls you use, plus a SunPass service fee of $5 per day. That service fee is capped at $15 for the rental, while the tolls themselves are whatever you actually drive through. Most guests prepay SunPass when they book, so there's nothing to pay after the trip and nothing comes out of the security deposit.

Our cars stay within Florida, which still leaves you the Keys, the Everglades, the Gulf Coast and Palm Beach to explore.

Florida Road Rules That Surprise European Drivers

Driving in Miami is easier than most European city centers. A few rules are different from home, though, and they're worth knowing before you leave the garage.

Right turn on red is allowed

After coming to a complete stop at a red light, you may turn right if the way is clear, yielding to pedestrians and traffic with the green. The exception is any intersection with a sign prohibiting it, and Miami has plenty of those, so look for the sign before you go.

Stop for school buses, in both directions

When a yellow school bus stops and displays its stop signal, traffic in both directions must stop. The only exception is a divided highway with a raised median, a physical barrier or an unpaved strip at least five feet wide, where oncoming traffic can continue. This is strictly enforced, and it surprises visitors more than any other rule.

School zone speed limits

The speed limit drops to 15 mph (ranging up to 20 mph max in urban zones) when flashing yellow lights or posted signs are active

Miles, gallons and mph

Speed limits are posted in miles per hour, distances are in miles, and fuel is sold by the gallon. One mile is about 1.6 kilometers, so a 45 mph limit is roughly 72 km/h.

Picking Up: Airport, Port, Beach or Brickell

You have five pickup options, so you can start wherever your trip does:

  • Miami International Airport (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL): fully self-service, with step-by-step instructions sent before you land.

  • Miami Beach HQ: our home base, minutes from Ocean Drive.

  • Downtown / Port of Miami: self-service pickup inside the parking garage, ideal for cruise and dowtwon guests.

  • Brickell: self-service, contactless garage pickup in the heart of Brickell.

Staying in South Beach? We can deliver the car to you with 48 hours' notice.

Your vacation starts the moment you land, not after an hour in a rental line.

Booking, Changes and Cancellations

Book directly on our website and you'll see the full picture before you pay. A few policies worth knowing:

  • Cancellations within 48 hours of pickup carry a bank fee of roughly 10%. The same 48-hour rule applies to date and car changes.

  • No-shows are charged the full rental. We hold your car for two hours, so if your flight is delayed, call us at (305) 799-7892 and we'll work with you.

  • Hours: our phone line is open 7:30 AM to 8 PM daily. EST time zone

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent a car in Miami with a European driver's license?

Yes. Florida lets visitors drive on a valid license from their country of residence, as long as it's in their name and physically with them. Bring your original passport and your payment card too. We also recommend an International Driving Permit if your license isn't printed in English, because it helps anyone reading it understand your details quickly.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive in Florida?

Official Florida guidance asks visitors for a valid license from their country of residence and doesn't list an International Driving Permit as a requirement. We still recommend carrying one, particularly with a non-English license. It's a translation that works alongside your original license, never instead of it, and you must get it in your home country before you travel.

Can I rent a car in Miami with a debit card?

At Miami Convertibles, most European guests can pay with a debit card, while renters from the US and Canada need a major credit card. Rules can vary by country, so mention your card when you book and we'll confirm it. On a debit card, the security deposit is held from your available balance, so budget for it.

How much is the security deposit on a convertible rental in Miami?

With us it depends on the model: $300 for the Mustang Convertible or Jeep Wrangler, $500 for the Jeep Sahara or Porsche Boxster, $1,000 for the Mustang GT Convertible and $1,500 for the Corvette C8. We release the deposit the same day you return the car; your bank controls how quickly it shows up.

How old do you have to be to rent a convertible in Miami?

It depends on the car. At Miami Convertibles, you can drive the Mustang Convertible or Jeep Wrangler from 21, the Jeep Sahara from 23, the Mustang GT Convertible and Porsche Boxster from 25, and the Corvette C8 from 28. Every model on our fleet page lists its seats, mileage and minimum age.
